Stupid AK question
 

...How difficult is it to properly mill out a single stack AK to fit the standard full magazines? I can get one for $350 and I think its about time to get one. I gotta admit I dont know much about 'em, but Id rather learn about them by owning one than hearing about it,before its too late.

As I understand it, all double stack WASR-10's are in fact single stack receivers that have had the magazine well modified.

If I had to do it, I would probably pull out the bolt carrier and gas piston ect. plug the gas tube and barrel with tissue and tape, and then scribe the new well outline, rough with a dremel, and then finish with a file. I'm guessing about 5 hours work. How much is your time worth to you? Can you get a double stack for a bit more?

I personally like the under folder and side folders for storage reasons. Do you have a preference?

I can get Romanian side folders for $500... that sounds preferable.It'd be my first AK, so I have no preference @ the moment...I thought it was a stupid question!

I would go with that deal in a heartbeat unless someone on here knows of a better price or has heard something bad about side folders? When I was looking in to the subject I remember the side folders being recommended over the under folders for the reason below.

I like the looks of the under-folders but usability suffers due to the bad cheek weld potential. I wrapped mine in para cord to make it better but I have no illusions on what that gun is for. Comfort takes second priority to transportability. If I had to do it again, I don't think cosmetics would take priority over usability though...
